Bur oak is a large, hardy, long-lived tree that is native to the Great Plains and Canada. Bur oak prefers adequate moisture and clean cultivation and will grow to a height of over 50 feet. This species is grown as a “plug” in containers, so it will establish easily and have medium growth rates (1 to 2 feet /yr.) on a variety of sites. Container bur oak do not require sweating to break dormancy in contrast to bare root stock of the species. This year’s crop was grown from seed collected in central North Dakota. Plant trees 8 to 12 feet apart in windbreaks. Five-foot high tree tubes are recommended for protection from wildlife depredation. ~ Towner State Nursery
